But despite successes, Atlanta struggles with vestiges of the Old South that never have been fully laid to rest.
The recent death of Atlanta's first African-American mayor has spurred controversy over how to honor his memory. Many blacks have demanded that Hartsfield International Airport be renamed in honor of Maynard Jackson. But

The future of U.S. and European transatlantic relations will be the focus of a conference to be held in Atlanta on Oct. 3, which will be attended by former President Bush, former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl and former Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev.
